Programme overview

A Leader’s Journey is a structured leadership development mastermind based on John C. Maxwell’s internationally recognised book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.

Presented over ten interactive sessions, the programme guides participants through foundational leadership principles that can help them expand their personal leadership capacity, strengthen their influence, and increase the value they add to their teams and organisations.

Each session combines licensed Maxwell Leadership content, guided reflection, facilitated group discussion, and practical application. Participants are encouraged to examine their current leadership practices, learn from the perspectives of others, and identify intentional actions that support continued growth.

The programme is designed around the understanding that leadership development is a journey. Sustainable growth occurs when participants move beyond simply knowing leadership principles and begin applying them consistently in the way they think, communicate, make decisions, build relationships, and lead others.

Programme Purpose

The purpose of this mastermind is to help participants:

  • Grow in their understanding of effective leadership
  • Identify opportunities to raise their current level of leadership
  • Strengthen their capacity to influence and add value to others
  • Apply established leadership principles to real workplace situations
  • Learn through reflection, conversation, and the shared wisdom of the group
  • Develop greater intentionality in their personal leadership journey
  • Translate leadership insight into meaningful action

The facilitator’s role is to guide participants through the leadership principles, create space for thoughtful discussion, and help each person connect the learning to their own leadership context. The central focus remains on adding value to people and supporting the growth of both the individual leader and those they lead.

Programme Format

Duration: 10 weeks
Session length: Approximately 60 minutes per session
Final session: Approximately 75 minutes
Delivery: Online
Format: Small-group facilitated mastermind
Core content: Licensed Maxwell Leadership learning material

During most sessions, participants explore two leadership laws. Each principle is introduced through a short video, followed by facilitated discussion and practical application.

A typical session includes:

  • A brief check-in and reflection on the previous week
  • Licensed video teaching from Maxwell Leadership
  • Guided completion of key learning points
  • Facilitated discussion and application questions
  • Personal leadership reflection
  • A practical action or growth commitment
  • Optional reading or application between sessions

The emphasis is on active participation. While the facilitator provides the structure and guidance, participants contribute significantly to the learning through their observations, experiences, questions, and reflections.

The Leadership Journey

Across the programme, participants explore the 21 Laws through a progressive leadership journey.

Session 1: Raising Your Leadership Capacity

The Law of the Lid and the Law of Influence

Participants begin by assessing their current leadership awareness and considering how their leadership ability affects their overall effectiveness.

The session introduces two foundational ideas:

  • A leader’s capacity can place a limit on personal and organisational effectiveness.
  • Leadership is ultimately demonstrated through influence rather than position or title.

Participants reflect on their current leadership level, their potential for growth, and the practical steps needed to strengthen their influence.

Session 2: Developing and Navigating as a Leader

Participants examine leadership as an ongoing process and consider the importance of intentional preparation, direction, and planning.

Session 3: Adding Value and Building Trust

The focus shifts towards serving others, understanding what people value, and building the trust required for sustainable leadership.

Session 4: Earning Respect and Developing Leadership Awareness

Participants consider how leaders earn respect and how experience, giftedness, reflection, and feedback contribute to leadership intuition.

Session 5: Attracting and Connecting with People

This session explores how a leader’s character and qualities influence the people they attract, as well as the importance of connecting relationally before asking others to follow.

Session 6: Building the Right Circle and Empowering Others

Participants reflect on the people closest to them and examine what is required to release responsibility, opportunity, and authority to others.

Session 7: Modelling Leadership and Creating Buy-In

The focus is on leading by example and understanding why people often need to believe in the leader before fully embracing the vision.

Session 8: Creating Momentum and Establishing Priorities

Participants consider how leaders generate progress and focus their time, energy, and resources on what matters most.

Session 9: Understanding Timing and the Cost of Leadership

The group explores the importance of wise timing, leadership responsibility, and the personal sacrifices that may accompany meaningful leadership.

Session 10: Multiplying Leaders and Creating a Legacy

The final session draws the journey together by considering how leaders develop other leaders, create sustainable growth, and build an influence that continues beyond their own direct involvement.

Session One Spotlight

The opening session establishes the foundation for the entire mastermind.

Participants are invited to:

  • Introduce themselves and identify what they hope to gain
  • Assess their current level of leadership knowledge
  • Reflect on how leadership affects personal and organisational success
  • Consider their present leadership capacity
  • Identify what their leadership potential could become
  • Develop an initial plan for raising their leadership level
  • Choose someone who could support accountability for their growth

The session introduces the principle that leadership ability influences effectiveness and that leadership has a multiplying impact on others.

Participants are also encouraged to consider leadership as influence. They reflect on how valuing people, gaining respect, and exceeding expectations can strengthen their ability to positively influence those around them.
