Lunch 'n Learn overview
We communicate constantly—in meetings, emails, conversations, presentations and everyday workplace interactions.
Yet communicating a message does not necessarily mean that people feel heard, understood or motivated to respond.
Everyone Communicates, Few Connect is an engaging Lunch ’n Learn inspired by John C. Maxwell’s principles of connection and influence.
The session helps participants explore the difference between merely exchanging information and creating genuine connection. It introduces practical ideas for strengthening relationships, increasing influence and communicating in ways that encourage understanding, collaboration and positive action.
The central message is simple: connecting is not an ability reserved for naturally charismatic people. It is a skill that can be learned, practised and strengthened.
Session Objective
The objective of this Lunch ’n Learn is to help participants become more intentional about creating connection through their everyday communication.
Participants will be encouraged to:
- recognise the difference between communication and connection;
- understand how connection strengthens influence and relationships;
- consider the emotional and relational impact of their communication;
- recognise that technical expertise alone may not inspire engagement;
- identify personal strengths that can help them connect authentically;
- move beyond a one-size-fits-all communication approach; and
- choose one practical way to connect more effectively with others.
Session Outline
Communication Is Not Always Connection
Participants explore why delivering a clear message does not automatically create understanding, trust or engagement.
Connection Strengthens Influence
The session considers how the ability to relate to people can influence collaboration, leadership effectiveness, relationships and workplace results.
Seeing the Person behind the Message
Participants reflect on the importance of recognising people’s perspectives, emotions and individual needs rather than focusing only on facts or tasks.
Connecting Is a Learnable Skill
The session challenges the assumption that good connectors are simply born that way and encourages participants to approach connection as an intentional practice.
Using What You Bring
Participants consider how their relationships, knowledge, experience, strengths and personal story may help them communicate with credibility and authenticity.
Making Communication about Others
Attention is given to moving beyond “What do I want to say?” towards “What does this person or audience need in order to understand, engage and respond?”
One Conversation at a Time
The session concludes by inviting participants to identify one relationship or communication opportunity in which they can practise connecting more intentionally.

Beyond Being Heard
