Lunch 'n Learn overview
Â
Every day, we participate in teams: within our workplaces, families, communities and professional relationships.
Yet simply belonging to a group does not automatically create effective teamwork.
The Power of Teamwork is an engaging Lunch ’n Learn inspired by two principles from John C. Maxwell’s The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork: the Law of Significance and the Law of the Niche.
The session explores why meaningful achievement rarely happens in isolation and how teams become more effective when people recognise one another’s strengths, collaborate intentionally and contribute in roles where they can add the greatest value.
Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own approach to teamwork, the barriers that may prevent collaboration and the distinctive contribution they bring to the people around them.
Session Objective
The objective of this Lunch ’n Learn is to help participants understand two essential principles of effective teamwork and apply them to their own workplace relationships and responsibilities.
Participants will be encouraged to:
- recognise why significant results require collaboration;
- move beyond an overly individualistic approach to achievement;
- identify attitudes or assumptions that may limit teamwork;
- appreciate the value of complementary strengths;
- recognise that every person has a meaningful contribution to make;
- consider whether their current responsibilities use their strengths effectively;
- become more intentional about understanding the people around them; and
- identify one practical way to strengthen their contribution to the team.
Session Outline
Why Teamwork Matters
Participants explore why the greatest goals, challenges and opportunities usually require more than one person’s ability, perspective or effort.
The Law of Significance
The session introduces the principle that meaningful achievement depends on people being willing to work with and rely on others.
What Keeps People Working Alone?
Participants reflect on factors that may make collaboration difficult, including:
- excessive self-reliance;
- insecurity;
- reluctance to ask for help;
- underestimating the size of the challenge; and
- natural preferences for working independently.
From “Me” to “We”
Attention is given to the shift from personal accomplishment towards shared ownership, contribution and collective success.
The Law of the Niche
Participants explore the principle that every team member has a place where their strengths, experience and abilities can add the greatest value.
The Right Contribution in the Right Place
The session considers what may happen when people are:
- underutilised;
- working outside their strengths;
- placed in roles that do not suit them; or
- given opportunities that align with their capability and potential.
Knowing the Team, the Situation and the Person
Participants reflect on the importance of understanding:
- where the team is going;
- what the present situation requires;
- what each person brings; and
- how responsibilities can be aligned more effectively.
Recognising Your Own Contribution
The session invites participants to consider their strengths, interests, experience and the work through which they contribute most naturally.
Taking the Next Teamwork Step
Participants identify one action that could help them collaborate more effectively, ask for support, recognise another person’s strengths or contribute more intentionally.
The Lunch ’n Learn Experience
This concise and engaging session may include:
- facilitated teamwork insights;
- relatable workplace examples;
- audience participation;
- guided personal reflection;
- light-hearted interactive moments;
- strengths and contribution questions; and
- a focused teamwork commitment.
Who Should Attend?
This session is suitable for:
- employees at all organisational levels;
- intact workplace teams;
- leaders and managers;
- project and cross-functional teams;
- newly formed teams;
- emerging leaders;
- professionals who work across departments; and
- organisations seeking to strengthen collaboration and shared responsibility.
What Participants Will Take Away
Participants will leave with:
- a clearer understanding of why teamwork matters;
- greater awareness of the limitations of trying to accomplish everything alone;
- insight into attitudes that may restrict collaboration;
- appreciation for the different strengths people bring;
- greater awareness of where they personally add value;
- encouragement to support others in finding their best contribution; and
- one practical commitment for becoming a stronger team player.
Great Teams Do More Than Work Together
They recognise that no one person carries every strength, answer or ability.
They combine their contribution, trust one another and create space for people to perform where they can make the greatest difference.
Bring your strengths. Value the contribution of others. Achieve more together.
