Lunch 'n Learn overview

People are not motivated by the same things.

One person may be energised by challenge and achievement, while another may respond more strongly to recognition, stability, meaningful relationships, accuracy or the opportunity to make a difference.

Discover Your Motivation is an engaging Lunch ’n Learn that helps participants explore the connection between behavioural style, psychological needs and personal motivation.

Using the Tall Trees Leadership framework, the session introduces four broad behavioural styles and considers how each may be energised, discouraged or re-engaged in different ways.

Participants are encouraged to understand themselves more accurately, recognise what supports their best performance and develop practical ways to regain momentum when motivation begins to decline.

Session Objective

The objective of this Lunch ’n Learn is to help participants understand that motivation is personal and to recognise how their behavioural preferences may influence what energises them.

Participants will be encouraged to:

  • recognise that different people are motivated by different needs;
  • explore the relationship between behaviour, environment and motivation;
  • develop greater awareness of the four basic leadership styles;
  • identify possible motivators associated with their own natural style;
  • recognise why certain work environments may increase or reduce energy;
  • notice what tends to happen when they become stalled;
  • understand why the same motivational approach does not work for everyone; and
  • choose one practical strategy for strengthening motivation and performance.

Session Outline

Motivation Is Personal

Participants explore why rewards, encouragement, pressure and goals affect people differently.

The session introduces a range of possible human motivators, including:

  • autonomy;
  • competence;
  • belonging;
  • achievement;
  • recognition;
  • understanding;
  • purpose;
  • security;
  • closure; and
  • personal value.

Understanding Behavioural Style

Participants receive an accessible introduction to the four basic leadership styles.

The emphasis is not on placing people into rigid categories, but on recognising behavioural tendencies that may influence communication, decision-making, pace, relationships and performance.

What Shapes the Way We Show Up?

The session briefly considers how natural tendencies may be influenced by:

  • personal wiring;
  • environment;
  • experiences; and
  • role models.

This helps participants understand why people with similar responsibilities may approach work in very different ways.

Motivation through Challenge and Progress

Participants explore how some individuals are energised by:

  • challenge;
  • control;
  • authority;
  • competition;
  • visible progress; and
  • meaningful achievement.

Attention is also given to the importance of simplifying goals and creating measurable movement when motivation stalls.

Motivation through Recognition and Connection

The session considers how others may be energised by:

  • recognition;
  • approval;
  • enthusiasm;
  • enjoyable experiences;
  • social connection; and
  • opportunities to work with people.

Participants reflect on the value of shorter work segments, shared progress and relational encouragement.

Motivation through Security and Stability

Participants explore how some people are motivated by:

  • appreciation;
  • consistency;
  • supportive relationships;
  • clear expectations;
  • stability; and
  • a friendly, cooperative environment.

The session considers how routines, trusted feedback and steady progress may help restore momentum.

Motivation through Excellence and Accuracy

Attention is given to people who may be energised by:

  • quality;
  • value;
  • logic;
  • evidence;
  • planning;
  • accuracy; and
  • completing work correctly.

Participants consider how clear plans and progress measures can support performance—while also avoiding the trap of waiting for perfection.

The Environment Matters

The session explores why people often perform more effectively in environments that fit their natural needs and strengths.

Participants reflect on:

  • the conditions in which they do their best work;
  • the environments that drain or distract them;
  • the support they need;
  • the type of feedback that helps them; and
  • changes they may be able to make within their current context.

What to Do When Motivation Stalls

Participants identify practical strategies suited to different motivational needs, such as:

  • creating a healthy challenge;
  • breaking work into smaller steps;
  • reconnecting with others;
  • establishing a dependable routine;
  • seeking feedback;
  • measuring progress;
  • focusing on progress rather than perfection; or
  • reconnecting the task to a meaningful purpose.

Taking the Next Step

The session concludes by inviting each participant to identify:

  • what currently motivates them;
  • what may be reducing their energy;
  • what kind of environment helps them thrive; and
  • one practical action that could help them regain or sustain momentum.

The Lunch ’n Learn Experience

This concise and engaging session may include:

  • facilitated motivation and leadership style insights;
  • relatable workplace examples;
  • audience participation;
  • guided self-reflection;
  • discussion of motivational differences;
  • practical “when stalled” strategies; and
  • a focused personal application commitment.

Who Should Attend?

This session is suitable for:

  • employees at all organisational levels;
  • leaders and managers;
  • emerging leaders;
  • professionals experiencing reduced energy or momentum;
  • teams seeking to understand one another better;
  • human resources and people-development professionals;
  • employees navigating demanding or changing environments; and
  • anyone interested in improving self-awareness and personal performance.

What Participants Will Take Away

Participants will leave with:

  • a clearer understanding of why motivation differs from person to person;
  • introductory insight into the four basic leadership styles;
  • greater awareness of their likely motivational preferences;
  • insight into the connection between environment and performance;
  • practical ideas for regaining momentum when they feel stuck;
  • greater appreciation for the different needs of colleagues; and
  • one personal strategy for strengthening motivation.

Motivation Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

People are more likely to perform consistently when they understand what energises them, what disrupts their momentum and what conditions help them thrive.

Know what drives you. Recognise what stalls you. Create the conditions to move forward.
