21-Day Performance & Resilience Pathway for IAC Candidates
Can you access, integrate and apply what you know when the pressure is high?
Â
Prepare your mind for the moments that matter.
21 days. Three focused weeks. Small daily practices to strengthen your focus, resilience and performance readiness.
Overview
You have spent years developing the knowledge and competence required for your journey towards becoming a Chartered Accountant (SA).
Now comes another challenge:
Can you access, integrate and apply what you know when the pressure is high?
Preparing for the Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) involves more than mastering technical content.
It also means preparing yourself to think clearly when something feels unfamiliar, respond constructively when you get stuck, manage your energy during demanding assessment days and recover sufficiently to give each paper your best available effort.
IAC READY is a self-paced, positive psychology-informed toolkit developed specifically for candidates preparing for the IAC Board Exams.
Over 21 days, you will engage in short, practical coaching exercises designed to strengthen the psychological resources that support effective performance under pressure.
Rather than adding hours of learning to an already demanding preparation schedule, the toolkit introduces small, intentional practices that can become part of your existing study routine.
The goal is not to eliminate pressure. It is to develop the resources to respond to it more effectively.
Why IAC READY?
The IAC challenges candidates to demonstrate competence through integrated professional scenarios, drawing together technical knowledge, professional values, attitudes and relevant acumens.
And candidates must do so across three demanding assessment days.
Under pressure, even well-prepared candidates may experience moments of uncertainty, hesitation, overthinking, frustration or self-doubt.
You may recognise some of these thoughts:
- "There is just too much to know."
- "What if the question looks completely different from what I expected?"
- "I understand the work, but sometimes I freeze under pressure."
- "I spend too much time on a difficult requirement."
- "What if one bad paper affects the next one?"
- "How can I maintain my focus and energy over three consecutive days?"
These experiences do not necessarily mean that you lack competence.
They may signal an opportunity to strengthen how you respond to pressure, uncertainty and setbacks.
IAC READY helps you prepare for these moments before you encounter them in the assessment.
Your 21-Day Journey
Week 1 — Build Your Inner Resources
Strengthen your foundation for performance.
Before you can manage pressure effectively, it helps to understand how you typically respond to it.
During Week 1, you will identify your personal pressure patterns, recognise evidence of your existing competence and practise shifting from unhelpful thinking towards more constructive responses.
You will explore:
- Your personal pressure triggers and responses.
- Building realistic confidence through evidence of past mastery.
- Recognising strengths and resources you can draw on.
- Developing realistic optimism and self-belief.
- Managing unhelpful comparison and self-doubt.
- Protecting the energy required for sustained preparation.
Your Week 1 outcome: A clearer understanding of your personal performance resources and how to use them.
Week 2 — Strengthen Your Performance Under Pressure
Learn to respond, rather than react.
What happens when you encounter a requirement you did not expect?
Do you rush, freeze, overthink, become frustrated or lose confidence?
Week 2 focuses on strengthening your ability to pause, refocus and adapt when things do not go according to plan.
Through brief daily practices, you will develop strategies to:
- Recognise when pressure is disrupting your thinking.
- Regain focus when you feel overwhelmed.
- Respond more constructively to uncertainty.
- Find alternative approaches when your first strategy does not work.
- Manage perfectionism, frustration and mental fatigue.
- Recover your attention after a difficult moment.
You will also be introduced to the IAC PACE Tool, a simple, practical technique to support clearer thinking during high-pressure moments.
Your Week 2 outcome: A personalised toolkit of practical responses for challenging assessment situations.
Week 3 — Prepare to Perform, Adapt & Recover
Get ready for the complete three-day assessment experience.
The IAC is not simply about performing well on the first day.
It requires candidates to manage their attention, confidence, energy and recovery across three consecutive professional papers.
A difficult requirement should not determine the rest of your paper.
And one difficult paper should not determine how you approach the next.
During Week 3, you will prepare strategies to:
- Establish a practical pre-exam performance routine.
- Use brief mental resets during demanding papers.
- Manage your energy and attention over extended periods.
- Reduce unhelpful post-exam analysis and comparison.
- Recover physically and psychologically between papers.
- Protect your readiness for the following day.
- Develop your personalised three-day performance plan.
Your Week 3 outcome: A practical plan for arriving prepared, responding constructively and recovering between papers.
What Makes This Toolkit Different?
Small practices. Meaningful preparation. No unnecessary additional workload.
IAC READY is designed to complement your technical examination preparation, not compete with it.
You will work through brief interventions that can be incorporated into your existing daily routine.
The toolkit draws on principles from positive psychology, resilience, psychological capital, coaching and performance self-regulation.
Its focus is on developing four essential performance capacities:
ACCESS — Draw on what you already know, even when pressure or self-doubt interferes with your thinking.
INTEGRATE — Move beyond isolated subject thinking to consider the wider scenario, professional context and relevant information.
ADAPT — Remain flexible and constructive when a question or situation differs from your expectations.
RECOVER — Manage setbacks, reset your attention and protect your resources for what comes next.
Rather than simply reading about resilience, you will have opportunities to practise it.
What Will You Receive?
Your IAC READY Toolkit will include:
